Frequently Asked Questions
How long will couples therapy take?
When couples call me, I often hear them share an experience from previous therapy. They tell me they are “tired of talking about it” and don’t feel progress. That’s why the 2-Day Workshop was created – to target that goal of being short-term and solutions-focused. Therapy can take months if you want to explore the “why” and the core of the problem. You also don’t need that to experience change. How long therapy will take depends on the problem you’re facing, the type of solution you want to implement, and the type of therapy you choose.
How do I get my partner to come to couples therapy?
Both of you need to feel comfortable and confident with your therapist, so the choice of the “right” therapist should come from both of you. If you are both interested in therapy, then I recommend scheduling a consultation so you both can get a feel for the therapist before committing to that service. The consultation should include both of you.
If your partner is not interested in couples therapy, then I recommend you search for a therapist who has a systematic view of change to see individually so you have that support. I would also recommend reading books to get ideas on your own so you can impact the relationship. Sometimes, one person is the driver for change in a relationship. If you make changes, it can often change the relationship, so exploring these resources can be a win-win.
Do you work with individuals?
Yes, but rarely. I work primarily with couples and rarely take on individual clients. The reason is, that if I accept you as an individual client, then I will not work with you as a couple. We would have too strong of a professional relationship one-on-one and couples therapy would be inappropriate.
Do you accept insurance or Medicaid?
No, I do not accept insurance or Medicaid; however, I’m always open to creating what is called a superbill for my clients. A superbill is a document that can be used to submit a request for reimbursement with some insurance companies. I recommend reaching out to your insurance company prior to going with this route.
How much will couples therapy cost?
Pricing for the two service options:
The 2-Day Workshop is $3,200. This includes all the time spent together, your workbook (to take home with you), all questionnaires, any other tools I may use (such as other handouts or Gottman card decks), snacks, drinks, etc. There are no surprise bills or additional charges.
The total of $3,200 is broken into two payments:
- Deposit: $1,500. Once the deposit is received, your days are reserved and you will receive a link to start your questionnaires.
- Time of Service: $1,700
Weekly Couples Therapy is $120 per hour. Since it is couples therapy, most sessions run 90 minutes to allow for both couples to have time to express their needs.
Please note that pricing is subject to change; however, clients are notified at least 60 days in advance of any pricing changes.
Can we come back after the 2-Day Workshop?
Yes – that looks different for every couple depending on your situation. Some couples have experienced a surprise dilemma and want to return for another 2-Day Workshop. Other times, couples have met for a few hours to adjust their solution as they have learned more details about their needs.
An example is a couple coming for another 2-Day Workshop after learning they were expecting a child when the husband was about to be deployed. Finding solutions was time sensitive and they wanted dedicated time to explore what the family needed and create a game plan.
