It’s obvious that compliments are a win when you receive them, but what if I told you that compliments are a win to give? That’s right, it’s a win-win and I’m going to show you how to utilize compliments for connection and conflict management.
A Brief Point on Receiving a Compliment
It may go without saying, but it’s nice to receive a compliment. A compliment is a way to show gratitude and appreciation for something we do. We all need that recognition from our partners. It is a necessary piece to a relationship. It is a win-win, so both sides need to be honored here. While this is most obvious, I want you to think about compliments in another way, too.

Compliments Are A Communication Tool
Compliments can be used in a way that honors my partner’s contributions while still acknowledging my needs. Not only am I acknowledging their work, but I’m also communicating secondary points such as “Please do this more often”, “I feel connected and loved by you right now”, or “I know we’re a partnership when…”.
When we focus on things that need to be changed, our partners can often feel stuck in the problem. Instead, when we focus on what’s going well, we are communicating more opportunities to keep going.
By communicating a compliment, we are communicating opportunities to meet our needs.
Examples

Help around the house = Thank you for putting your socks in the hamper.
Quality time = I know work has been busy, thanks for dinner together.
Family time = You’re an amazing father/mother/guardian.
Positivity = I appreciate your excitement about…
Intimacy = You know exactly how to give the best massages.
Compliments in return = Laundry was tough, thanks for noticing I caught up.
