How To Force Myself To Relax At Work

Master the art of relaxation with our top 5 tips to unwind and destress at your workplace. Embrace a calmer day with easy-to-implement strategies.

When I’m talking about forcing your body to react a certain way, I’m talking about utilizing your physiology to your advantage!

A lot of relaxation techniques can be used when you are already out of the thick of the stress and need help to start relaxing. That can be a big jump: to go from high levels of stress to being at a place to start calming down. This article can help bridge that gap and make that jump a little easier to manage.

These 5 tips can be utilized to help bridge that gap.

Tip #1: Change the temperature.

Go Outside. Right now we are in the middle of changing seasons and going into fall. As the heater will start to be on inside, go outside to feel some cool, crisp air. Or vice versa, if it is chilly in the office, go outside and feel the sun’s warmth.

Water. If you can’t go outside, I have another trick for you. Go into the restroom and wash your hands in either really cold water. Go a step further and run the water up your arms or touch your wet hands to your face or neck. Push your whole body to experience that temperature change by utilizing the water.

Tip #2: Sucking.

You parents out there know how much this can help babies. Even though we grow up, it can still help us.

Candy, mints, gum, or a drink (a bonus is a straw in your drink). If you are in a meeting and feel yourself getting stressed out, even just sucking on your cheek softly can give you some of these benefits. Anything to wake up those taste buds and get that physiological response.

Tip #3: Rocking.

The Movement. You can rock side to side or even front to back. The idea here is to make sure your core is a part of the movement, so don’t just focus on your head.

Speed. If you are experiencing higher levels of stress, you will likely find it helpful to rock in a faster movement. As you are lowering your stress, try to match the speed of your rocking with that experience by continuing to lower the speed.

Tip #4: Lighting.

Darker. If you are working in your office and are feeling stressed, consider turning off those big bright fluorescent lights, closing the blinds, turning the brightness down on your computer, etc.

Brighter. If you are in a dark room, then the opposite applies. You may have just started your day and are still in bed. If you are waking up stressed, try changing the lighting. Open up those windows, go outside into the sun, etc. Get your body into the opposite space.

Tip #5: Sound.

To Calm Down. If you are wanting to calm down, you can use sound to help you. If you are in a loud office, close your door or put in some noise-canceling headphones to help decrease your stress. You can also use classical, jazz, or other music depending on your personal preferences.

To Get Focused. If you are anxious about a big meeting coming up, then think about how you get pumped out in another environment. Perhaps you listen to a specific song or playlist when you are working out. You can use that same playlist to get you into a similar state of mind.
