Stress Relief: Breathing From Your Diaphragm

Discover the secret to stress relief by mastering breathing from your diaphragm with our 8 simple steps. Experience the calm today.

Right now I am seeing higher levels of stress from many people. I’ll be focusing at-home tools on relaxation techniques this month in hopes of assisting in your stress relief.

This week: let’s focus on a breathing technique. You often hear diaphragmic breathing as a suggested way to relax, but how do you know if you are doing that effectively?

Breathing vertically:

When we are anxious or stressed out, we are likely breathing from our chest. Our stress breathing will move our bodies vertically instead of a more horizontal movement. You may even see your shoulders moving up and down.

Breathing horizontally:

When we are in a relaxed state, we are likely breathing from our diaphragm. This movement is more horizontal as you likely see your stomach move in and out. This is an ideal place – especially when we are focused on reducing stress, but how do you do that?

This exercise will help move to a more horizontal movement – i.e. your diaphragm.

Tips for breathing effectively:

  1. Sit or lie down comfortably – whichever seems more comfortable to you.
  2. Take deep, regular, even breaths.
  3. Take your time inhaling and exhaling. Ideally, breathe in through your nose.
  4. When you find your breaths are deep, regular, and even, then take it up a notch.
  5. Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach.
  6. Focus on the movement of your hands – is the hand on your chest or the hand on your stomach moving more?
  7. You are more likely to be breathing from your diaphragm when the hand on your stomach is moving more significantly than the hand on your chest.
  8. If it is challenging to move the hand on your stomach more, then that’s okay. Focus on taking those deep, regular breaths first and then go back to focusing on your hands.

This quick relaxation tip is a secret to calming yourself when times are stressful. If you are in the thick of your stress, this exercise may not be as effective. Instead, try to use this exercise when the peak of your stress is over and you are trying to calm yourself.

If you struggle to sleep, then try this technique to start. Sleeping concerns can go beyond this; however, it is a solid step to ground yourself after a long day.
