It’s almost Spring here in Colorado and I am hearing a lot of clients getting excited about warmer weather. Clients are talking about their gardens, the sun being out more often, and even some upcoming trips. With clients, I often talk about finding connection in the everyday moments, so they are not dependent on a trip; however, vacations are also a great way to strengthen your bond. Here are my tips for making your upcoming trips even more powerful to your connection!
Build the Anticipation
So your trip isn’t until July – who cares! Start building the anticipation for the trip now. By doing so, you are letting your partner know that your upcoming, special time together is on your mind.
You can build the anticipation by:
- Looking up photos of your destination – Find a unique, secluded location on Pinterest or scroll through images from a local photographer who knows all the best spots!
- Talking about the local cuisine – This may include how your vacation spot has snow crab and researching how it tastes different from Dungeness crab.
- Have a shopping date to purchase an outfit for the trip – A win-win because you are building anticipation and you get to go on a date. You can take this up another level by not wearing that outfit until you finally arrive on vacation!
- Plan out some songs or a book on tape for the road trip – Perhaps you know your partner’s favorite author or their go-to music.
- Make an easy reservation now – You want something easy to allow for flexibility as more of the trip unfolds (such as a massage at your resort). You want this to be something that could be rescheduled (only if needed) when you get closer but still have an event added to your calendar.

Showing Gratitude
You can also use reflection to strengthen your connection around an upcoming trip. Communicating or showing your gratitude has many mental and physical benefits including improved sleep, improved mood, improved immune system functions, decreased tension, decreased depression, and even decreased anxiety.
On top of the individual benefits, communicating your gratitude strengthens your relationship, too! This is a critical piece to the Gottman method which I use a lot here at The Couples Workshop. We all love for our actions to be accepted and appreciated. This is especially validated when it comes from people who matter the most.Â
Additional Benefit: Sharing your fondness and admiration for one another can influence your romance and intimacy – a great focus before a trip!
Showing and reflecting on gratitude may include:
- Thinking about the hard work you have put in
- Stories about your business growth
- Being thankful for your current financial security
- Hope for continued good health to allow you the ability to travel
- A supportive hug from your partner every day
- Acknowledging the time it takes to plan and prepare for a vacation
- Giving compliments
- Non-verbal affection such as passionate kisses and hugs
- Having a good laugh together 🙂
- Or even a forward reflection on the opportunities still to come…
While your vacation may be a few months away, your connection is not dependent on the vacation. Instead, grow the anticipation for your trip to strengthen your optimism, have a mini distraction during a stressful day, and motivate you to keep pushing for summer. Of course, we want to have positive experiences in each, everyday moment; however, that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some excitement, too!Â
Happy travels!
