I get a question similar to this often: why doesn’t my partner understand me? Both partners come in after an argument and talk about not being understood, not being heard, and feeling alone. You are feeling lonely in these moments, so it is important to find a middle ground here. The key to this is just that: the middle ground! To answer this question we need to break it down into your responsibility and your partner’s responsibility.
Why? This is a relationship. When we say something like “Why doesn’t my partner understand me”, that question is putting all of the blame and all of the solution on your partner’s actions. In reality, you can both be a part of this solution to make your connection stronger. The solution to this question is working together!
Your responsibility: communicating your needs effectively + Your partner’s responsibility: to be receptive to your needs

Since you are the one reading this post, I want you to change your questions. Instead of asking yourself, “Why doesn’t my partner understand me”, I want you to ask:
“How am I communicating my needs?” and “What can I do to better understand my partner?”
Question 1: How am I communicating my needs?
This is your opportunity to really make your point clear to your partner. Perhaps this may include what is frustrating for you, what you wish could be different, etc. Your challenge here is to be as open as possible because I know that loneliness and distrust impact your desire to share your needs again. At the same time, keep trying because your needs and your relationship are worth it!
Question 2: Do I understand what is going on for your partner during these stressful interactions?
Perhaps your partner gets overwhelmed when the conversation is heated and is unable to effectively hear you. Or perhaps you have discussed your need and your partner needs some examples to know what you like. Understanding the disconnect can help you break down that wall between you to get your needs met. Knowing your partner well equals better communication. Better communication is the key to getting your needs met.
